Abstract [en]

Chunkwood fuels have a particle size larger than normal chips which enables good drying and storage properties and are therefore appreciated by small-scale users. However, small-scale boilers optimized for chunkwood are not commercially available and the research question is if modern wood chip stokers, selected for having a robust fuel feeding system could feed and combust the fuel. Chunkwood fuel feeding, and combustion tests are performed in a 27-kW and a 240-kW wood chip stoker. Both boilers fulfill Ecodesign emission requirements for carbon monoxide (CO) at nominal load, but further optimization is required to fulfil requirements for dust. Partial load combustion needs to be further studied. There were problems with high stress on the fuel feeding system in both stokers, traced to when excessively large fuel pieces passed the outlet of the fuel bin and when fuel discs became trapped between the auger screw and the lid of the conveyor. Suggestions to solve the fuel feeding problems includes redesign of the fuel bin auger screw to cut oversized pieces, alternatively use of previously developed prototype conveyors that worked. Further studies are required to optimize the fuel feeding system and the combustion performance including a solution for partial load operation.

Abstract [en]

A convertible, zoned ventilation system was field-tested in a modern, airtight Swedish home when occupied either by an experimental team or by a family. Indoor air quality in the master bedroom was monitored under four ventilation strategies. Relative to constant air volume strategies (CAV), demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) that was responding to CO2 concentration extracted more air when people were present, but less in total over 24 h. This elevated the indoor air humidity, beneficial in climates with dry winter air. Multiple monitors within the bedroom indicated that vertical CO2 stratification occurred routinely, presumably due to low mixing of supply air from a wall-mounted diffuse vent, spreading the air radially over the wall. This seemingly improved air quality in the breathing zone under local (ceiling) extract ventilation but worsened it during more typical, centralised extract ventilation, where air escapes the room via an inner doorway. The local extract arrangement thus seemed to yield both improved ventilation efficiency and reduced contaminant spread to other rooms. The noted air quality variations within the room highlight the importance of sensor placement in demand-control ventilated spaces, even in small rooms such as bedrooms.

Abstract [en]

A greenhouse water curtain heating system allows heating of the greenhouse by low-temperature water, which can be obtained from residual waste heat sources. The water curtain can be applied on the outside of the greenhouse roof or enclosed between two foils. But also enclosed water curtains suffer from high heat losses, which limits the integration of low temperature waste heat sources. An effective way of reducing the heat losses is to combine the water curtain system with retractable liquid foam enclosed between two foils. But until now, a systematic evaluation of the thermal performance of such system combination is still lacking. Thus, this study aims to fill in this research gap by evaluating the heat transfer characteristics of a double-foil greenhouse roof section installed with a combined water curtain and liquid foam system. Experimental tests have been conducted under a wide range of temperature scenarios in a climate chamber where the heat loss and heat gains from the water curtain is measured. The results have been compared with the data in the existing studies. This study revealed that combining the water curtain system with liquid foam, reduces the heat losses by half compared to using just the water curtain: the heat loss coefficient was reduced from 4.4 W·m−2·K−1 down to 2.0 W·m−2·K−1. The heat losses through the roof using the combined system are also lower than the heat losses from a double foil greenhouse with other heating systems. An average water curtain temperature of 5.1 °C above the inside greenhouse temperature can compensate for the heat losses through the roof at an outdoor temperature of −19 °C. Based on the study results, recommendations for market implantation of this technology are provided. This study confirms energetic benefit of combining water curtains and the liquid foam technology.

Abstract [en]

A field study conducted in a modern Nordic single-family house with high airtightness and insulation levels, attempted to control summer indoor overheating using night-time cooling strategies. Exhaust air flow rates were manually scheduled by the researchers (based on weather forecasts), analogous to what an engaged occupant - or a predictive system - might do. Air temperatures at a nearby meteorological station peaked at 30 °C during 6 days in June that saw only 44 hours below 18 °C. Temperatures recorded indoors at the test house reached 32 °C, due also to very large solar gains, and never fell below 26 °C over 8 continuous days. It appears that under extended heat conditions that are exceptional now, but foreseen to become more frequent, some modern Nordic homes cannot be temperature controlled by ambient ventilation alone. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022. Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Industrial waste heat or residual heat as it is also called is a resource that is not used to any great extent in Sweden today. Residual heat involves the utilization of energy that otherwise would not have been utilized, and no alternative use is judged to exist. The purpose of this feasibility study is to investigate technologies that enables the utilization of residual heat for vegetable production.

A literature search has been conducted among international scientific literature from the 1940s onwards with a focus on technology for low-temperature heating of greenhouses. In a degree project that was actualized in connection with the literature study, measurements were made in climate chambers of heat losses and heat additions from the water supply between two plastic foils (water curtains). In addition, it was investigated how the heat transfer was affected by the addition of surface tension reducing agents (detergents). A follow-up measurement examined how heat losses from the water curtain system were affected by the simultaneous use of soap bubbles as insulation.

The literature review shows a relatively large number of studies for heating greenhouses with, cooling water from thermal power plants with cooling towers. In previous years, at least three major commercial greenhouse plants in the USA, France and the United Kingdom have been realized that were heated with fan convectors dimensioned for low-temperature operation. In the spring of 2021, a project is underway in Boden, Sweden, to build a greenhouse that is heated by waste heat from an air-cooled data center.

A major research focus has also been placed on water irrigation systems of greenhouse roofs with heating water (external water curtains), but a system that has been in operation for several years in France showed problems with lime scale coatings and growth of algae that reduced solar radiation penetration.

Water supply systems between two plastic foils (internal water curtains) have been used successfully in Japan and Korea as frost protection of crops using groundwater. During the day, the inner foil is retracted to maximize solar radiation. Variants with hot water supply in the voids of a double layer of acrylic extruded sheet have also been evaluated, but without commercial success. One idea with the water curtain systems has also been to absorb solar radiation during the day and store water in a water storage tank to be able to heat the greenhouse at night. To increase the water's absorption of long-wave solar radiation, copper chloride was added.

A technique for insulating greenhouses by supplying soap bubbles between the greenhouse's two transparent foils has been developed for a long time by various actors and is interesting for water curtain technology, as the greenhouse design allows the use of hot water curtains without any modification.

Measurements of heat loss and heat addition from a water curtain system were carried out as a degree project. The results showed that the heat losses are significantly reduced by the addition of surface tension reducing agents (detergents) and that an average water temperature of about 5 °C above the greenhouse temperature is sufficient to eliminate all heat losses from the greenhouse roof. In addition, measurements of simultaneous use of water curtain and bubbles as insulation showed further reduced heat losses. Both the experiments with the addition of detergent to the water curtain and the simultaneous use of the water curtain and bubbles showed positive results and do not seem to have been published before, which is why an extended study of how the technology can be used to use residual heat sources is justified.

Simulation of energy use in greenhouses that are heated with a water curtain and insulated with bubbles shows an energy cost saving of the order of about SEK 0.5 / kg tomato in a transition from primary district heating to district heating return line, and a saving of SEK 2 per kg tomato if free residual heat can be exploited.

Abstract [en]

Existing studies have developed some advanced controls for energy storage system charging/discharging in a building cluster (enabling PV power sharing among different buildings), which can effectively improve the aggregated performances. However, in the existing controls, the flexible demand shifting ability of electric vehicles (EVs) are rarely considered, leading to limited performance improvements at building cluster level. Thus, this study proposes a coordinated control of building cluster with both energy sharing and the EV charging considered, with the purpose of improving the cluster-level performance. The simulation results show that in a typical summer week in Sweden, the developed control can increase the cluster-level daily renewable selfconsumption by 40% and meanwhile reduce the electricity bills by as much as 20% compared with conventional controls for a summer week in Ludvika, Sweden

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Industrial waste heat or residual heat as it is also called is a resource that is not fully utilized. Residual heat involves the utilization of losses that would otherwise not have been utilized, and no alternative use of the heat is expected to exist. The purpose of this feasibility study is to investigate the possibilities and barriers to establishing a greenhouse for vegetable production in Borlänge, Sweden that is heated with waste heat.

A literature search among Swedish-language literature on energy statistics, heating technologies and energy efficiency for greenhouses has been carried out. Based on data on U-values for various cover materials, a calculation is made of the annual energy requirement for a greenhouse of 10,000 m2 in Borlänge and the dimensioning heat rate is calculated. Based on hourly weather data, the heat demand is also calculated considering the solar radiation and the heat demand per hour is calculated and summed monthly.

Measurement points in the district heating network of return temperature and the greenhouse's sizing power requirements are used to calculate the design heat flow rate that is compared to available flows in the district heating network.

It is found that existing capacity in the flue gas condenser at Kvarnsveden's paper mill can cover the entire power needs of the greenhouse by lowering the return temperature. During the four coldest months of the year, the flow rate through the flue gas condenser amounts to between 250 kg/s and 350 kg/s, which is about 4 to 6 times higher than the design heat water flow rate for a greenhouse of 10,000 m2. The condenser power can be increased by lowering the return temperature, while maintaining the water flow constant. It is the simplest solution for utilizing residual heat in Borlänge, but it requires that the greenhouses can be heated with the district heating return temperature which reaches as low as 42 ° C during the winter months. However, the literature study has not been able to detect any greenhouses that use low temperature heating, but an ongoing project are investigating how low-temperature excess heat from data centers can be used for greenhouse heating.

The heating need for continuous cultivation in a greenhouse of 10,000 m2 in Borlänge amounts to approximately 5 to 10 GWh / year. Lighting for year-round cultivation of tomatoes is estimated to be in the order of half the heating requirement and since it is used mainly during the darkest period, the lighting element will replace energy for heating to a corresponding degree.

The yield from year-round cultivation of tomatoes is reported to be as high as 66 kg/m2, but it also entails high energy consumption, corresponding to about 10 kWh/kg electricity and 10 kWh/kg heat. The heating cost for the district heating return amounts to about 220 SEK/m2 or 3.3 SEK/kg of tomato. Electricity costs for plant lighting and other operating costs for year-round cultivation are likely to exceed the heating costs.

Pipe heating systems, fan convectors and airborne heat are the dominant techniques for heat distribution and heating in greenhouses. The heat-emitting surface of a water-borne low-temperature heating system that uses return heat in Borlänge needs to be about 2 m2 per m2 of floor area, which is 3.5 times the surface area when using an 80/60 pipe heating system. The electric power requirement for circulating heating water in the greenhouse amounts to about 3 kW compared to the demand for an airborne heating system that is about 150 kW. System design and costs for heating systems for low temperature heating must be further investigated. Aspects such as the greenhouse's insulating performance in relation to the size of the heating plant, the length of the growing season, the need for lighting and the required yield must be considered.

Abstract [en]

Optimizing solar and pellet heating systems can be performed by system simulations in TRNSYS. However; this requires detailed boiler models that can properly model the thermal behaviour of the boilers, such as stratification and thermal response. This study uses a combination of existing models for modelling of the pellet burner part (TRNSYS Type 210) and the water volume (TRNSYS Type 340). This approach addresses the thermal dynamics and internal stratification more accurately than other available models. The objectives of this work are to develop a method for parameter identification for the model and to validate this method and the model itself. Sets of parameters are identified for two pellet boilers and one pellet stove with a water jacket (extended room heater) and the model is validated with a realistic dynamic operation sequence. The results show that modelling of stratification is essential in order to model the true behaviour of residential boilers. The test sequences used were adequate to parameterise the models and to provide the desired accuracy, except regarding the heat losses to room air. The model shows good accuracy for a stove and one boiler, but slightly worse performance for the other boiler regarding dynamics and modelling of the stratification.
