Abstract [en]

With today’s growing energy needs and the use of intermittent renewable energy sources, flexibility and control of how power is transferred in and between power grids is becoming increasingly important. Cooperation between the various power grids is a prerequisite for further developing and securing operations. Since the various power grids in the world are not synchronous, this cooperation was impossible before high voltage direct current (HVDC) was introduced. An HVDC link can interconnect two asynchronous networks by taking alternating current, converting it to direct current and then converting it back to suitable high voltage alternating current again. The advantages of this type of power transfer are significant. Reserve power and frequency stability measures can be sent instantaneously between the different asynchronous networks, thereby maintaining stability in the event of disturbances. Resources can be shared between networks and utilized where they are most needed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of using the Satellite internet provider Starlink as a telecommunication provider for HVDC control and protection signals, specifically the specified performance demands by Hitachi Energy. Practical tests were performed with the Starlink equipment and network to measure network performance metrics over a series of days and differing system variables such as connection protocols. The results showed a varied performance profile of Starlink with a clear difference depending on the protocol used. Weather data was collected and compared to network data for further analysis and showed weather effecting the system stability. The discussion addresses the system complexity of interacting variables and how that along the recorded metrics, is not compatible with existing HVDC telecommunication systems without careful system redesign. Possible use of the system is discussed for station operator information where performance demands are not as important as fault and control signals.
