Violence or Care? : Normalizing Digital Violence in Young Intimate Partner Relationships (English)
Abstract [en]

Digital violence in the form of control in youths and young adults’ partner relationships is a challenging issue for social work. This study mapped how digital control is described in research. A scoping review was conducted on peer-reviewed qualitative studies with participants aged 16-29 years, published 2015-2026. A thematic analysis of the findings of twelve included articles produced three themes: “control, jealousy and digital power in intimate relationships”, “the dissolution of boundaries: between care and control”, and “digital violence and its consequences for agency and well-being”.

Digital control was found to manifest through monitoring social media, demands for accessibility, control of messages and online status, location sharing and threatened dissemination of private material. Such behaviours are often normalized in relationships, interpreted as expressions of care or jealousy rather than violence. Digital control can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, reduced autonomy and social isolation, highlighting the issue’s relevance for social work.
