Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of the study was to map the levels of motivation and psychological well-being among students attending National Sports Education (NIU) in football at two schools, and to investigate the relationship between these variables. The aim was also to reflect on different types of motivation in relation to well-being. To deepen the understanding of the quantitative results, semi-structured interviews were also conducted.

Research questions:

1. What are the levels of motivation and psychological well-being among students attending National Sports Education (NIU) in football?

2. Is there a relationship between the students’ motivation and their psychological wellbeing?

3. How do the students themselves describe the relationship between their motivation and their well-being?

Method: The study was conducted using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design in which quantitative data were collected first and subsequently complemented with qualitative interviews. Data collection was carried out at two NIU football (Gymnasium) in Sweden. A total of 28 students participated in the survey. Motivation was measured using the Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II), and psychological well-being was measured using the WHO-5 Well-Being Index. The results were analysed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s α, and Spearman’s correlation analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using thematic analysis.

Results: The results showed that the students generally experienced relatively high well-being and a high degree of self-determined motivation. Intrinsic motivation had the highest mean score, while amotivation had the lowest. No statistically significant relationship between motivation and well-being could be demonstrated. The qualitative analysis resulted in four themes: influence and responsibility, development, community and belonging, and support and communication. The interviews showed that the opportunity to influence one’s situation, experience development, feel a sense of belonging, and receive support from coaches and significant others were perceived as important factors for both motivation and well-being.

Conclusion: The conclusion of the study is that students attending NIU football generally experience good motivation and good well-being. The results suggest that a supportive sports environment that promotes autonomy, competence, and relatedness may contribute positively to the students’ experiences. At the same time, further research with larger samples is needed to more clearly examine the relationship between motivation and psychological well-being among young elite athletes.

Abstract [sv]

Totalt deltog 28 elever i enkätundersökningen.
