In this study, Korean English teachers and students were surveyed to gain insight onto their perspectives on the targets and goals of the language education model in high school. 30 students and 18 teachers from high schools in a rural province in the country responded to a questionnaire, with both quantitative and qualitative questions, on their use of English, English varieties, and their views on English as a lingua franca. The results indicate that both groups welcome changes and diversity in English in theory, while in practice they are concerned and reluctant because of the perceived implications of language correctness on their important scholastic examinations. This study draws a comparison to a previous study by Elina Ranta (2010) in Finnish upper secondary schools in Finland
