In this study, we will investigate whether there is any statistically significant difference in the estimation of beta values for individual shares and for beta values in groups, in relation to which index is chosen as a market portfolio. The theoretical basis of the study is based on the modern portfolio theory, developed by Markowitz (1952). The results of this study show that for the individual shares' beta values, there are significant differences in the beta values between the indices from which the estimates were based. However, the tendency in estimating the beta values for individual stocks is that the narrower the index used, the higher the estimated beta value. At the group level, there is no significant difference in the estimates.
