Older people's experiences of physical activity: a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Physical activity involves different body movements, which leads to an increase in energy consumption in the body. Various health problems and increasing age are the biggest obstacles for the elderly to perform physical activity. The decreasing activity level leads to a rigid body and decreased muscle strength. Research shows the significant effect physical activity has on older people and how quality of life and health are improved. It is never too late for older people to start a more active life and older people should perform physical activity every week.Aim: The aim of this study was to Describe the elderly’s experiences of physical activity in relation to health and quality of life.Method: This study is a literature review based on 10 scientific articles from the CINAHL and PubMed databases. The articles come from Sweden, Australia, England, Scotland, Brazil and the USA. The articles were published between the years 2010 and 2020.Results: The study identified six different themes; 1) physical activity has a positive effect on one’s wellbeing, 2) regular physical activity improves strength and mobility, 3) joint physical activity provides social cohesion, 4) individual physical activity increases the feeling of being independent, 5) the surrounding environment affects the possibility of physical activity and 6) pain and fatigue make physical activity more difficult. The results showed that many older people liked to perform physical activity because it increased their independence and belonging, and their everyday life improved. Conclusion: The view of physical activity varies among the elderly and therefore it is important to adapt physical activity to the individual so that the elderly become more independent and motivated to perform physical activity.
