Nurses' experiences of caring for patients at high workloads - a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In research, nurses have shown that an increased workload could be linked to reduced quality of care and patient safety.Aims and objectives: The purpose of the study was to describe the nurse's experiences of caring for patients at high workload.Method: The work is a general literature review, and the results are based on thirteen scientific articles, obtained through searches in PubMed and CINAHL. The articles have been analyzed according to Friberg's three - step analysis.Result: The analysis of the result articles generated in six categories, Positive nursing despite high workload, Difficulty meeting nursing needs, Ethical challenges, Basic care needs cannot be met, Patient safety is threatened, Lack of care quality. The results show that the patient's care is not always at the center or that the care of the patient is not always safe especially during high workloads. Conclusions: The articles' results showed that nurses can experience patient care as positive despite a high workload. Nurses also described the care of the patient at high workload could be perceived as ethically challenging. It wasn't always patients who got it right or needed care. Nurses often experienced frustration at not being able to provide basic care or safe care to patients with high workloads.
