Implementing RPA – The working procedure to implement RPA and its challenges from customers’ and suppliers’ perspectives (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

RPA (Robotic Process Automation) is a technology for automating repetitive tasks within businesses with the aim of streamlining work. Previous research, however, show that 30–50% of all RPA projects fail. Research also shows that there are challenges associated with it’s implementation. The aim of this study is to examine how RPA suppliers work to implement RPA and highlight the challenges that may arise during the implementation of RPA from the perspective of customers and suppliers. The research questions are answered by conducting a literature study and qualitative semi-structured interviews with RPA suppliers and people from companies that have implemented RPA. Based on the suppliers' answers, a process model of the working procedure was created. The process model includes five steps: Mapping, Proof of Concept, Development, Testing, and Implementation. Furthermore, the results show that the challenges lie in creating an understanding of RPA, identifying appropriate business processes, concerns among employees and that the robot lacks cognitive skills. Finally, the study shows that focus should be placed on preparatory work and that communication is a key factor for success.
