Patient Experiences of Venous Ulcer Treatment - a Literature Review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Leg ulcers caused by venous insuffiency are common, especially among older people. The ulcers lead to great suffering for the affected patients and are associated with major costs for health care services. The treatment that includes ulcer care as well as treatment for the underlying disease is often lengthy and the ulcers are often recurrent.Aim To explore patient experiences of venous ulcer treatment.Method The literature review includes 15 scientific articles. Searches were conducted in CINAHL and PubMed. The analysis was conducted in four steps and consisted of sorting the content of the articles based on similarities and differences. Results Three main categories and nine subcategories were identified: Influence on autonomy (To be dependent on help, Need to adjust everyday life, Participation), Trust (Trust and security in the relationship with health care workers, Faith in treatment) and Barriers (Physiological barriers, Psychological barriers, Structural barriers, Deficient information). Conclusion From how patients with venous ulcers describes their experiences of the treatment, care deficits seem to exist. When given adequate information and when the patient feels seen like a person, the experience of the treatment appears to be more positive.
