Abstract [en]

Background: Somaliland is a developing country that is facing high maternal mortality and morbidity rates in a global comparison. The contributing factors are obstetric hemorrhage, infections and hypertension disorder of pregnancy. Access to high-quality postabortion care (PAC) prevents and treats women experiencing incomplete abortions due to miscarriages and unsafe abortions. In Somaliland, women’s experiences regarding PAC services have never been extensively explored.

Aim: Study explored women’s experiences of PAC services in public healthcare facilities in urban areas of Somaliland.

Methodology: A qualitative design utilized. Through in-depth interviews, to obtain information on women with incomplete abortions due to miscarriages and their experiences with PAC services. Data was analyzed using an inductive qualitative thematic analysis.

Results: Women in the community prefer to utilize local traditional herbs to treat miscarriages. Participants highlighted the quality of PAC that women received, which they perceived as ineffective. The two components of PAC were missing, such as family planning and service delivery and community awareness, whereas the third component was weak (i.e., emergency treatment).

Conclusions: The quality of PAC that women received was poor, whereas the major component was absent. Furthermore, findings suggest that women use other methods to manage miscarriages. Therefore, assessing the capacity of healthcare facilities that provide PAC is important for future studies. Finally, the capacity of midwives’ skills must be enhanced to improve PAC services.
