Nurses’ experiences in caring for the elderly with malnutrition : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Nurses must work to recognize and treat malnutrition and perform adequate nursing measures. Even so, malnutrition is a major problem in the elderly. Different barriers can exist that challenge nurses' opportunities in nutrition nursing.

Aim To describe nurses' experience of caring for the elderly with malnutrition.

Method The work was carried out as a structured literature study with elements of the methodology used in systematic reviews. A total of 11 scientific articles were included and analyzed through a content analysis.

Results All studies were qualitative published between 2011-2022 from Europe and Australia. Nurses lack the skills to recognize and treat malnutrition. Communication with the patient, between different professions in the team and between other care providers is lacking. The results showed organizational obstacles such as lack of time and the possibility of offering the patient a person-centered meal situation, which challenges the nurse's ability to provide the patient with good nutritional care.

Conclusions The organization needs to prioritize the work with malnutrition so that the nurse receives better training in the subject and is given time and space to work person-centered. Communication and documentation need to become easier to carry out between healthcare providers and guidelines for working with malnutrition need to be implemented in all operations
