Recovery from post-colonial identity trauma in a hybridised and polyphonic third space : A transcultural reading of The Return by Dulce Maria Cardoso (English)
Abstract [pt]

Abstract [en]

This thesis endeavours to carry out a literary analysis of the novel The Return by Dulce Maria Cardoso published in 2011, a seminal work of Lusophone literature that addresses the effects of the Portuguese decolonization process in Africa and the arrival of half a million former colonial settlers – dubbed returnees – to Portugal in the 1970s. The journey of the main character, Rui, is the focus of this study. An analysis of the trauma that Rui suffers in Angola and Portugal as a result of the binary identity choices he is presented with will be carried out, as well as an exploration of the pathways through which he seeks recovery by embracing a hybridised and transcultural identity, occupying a third space in a polyphony of voices within the Portuguese post-colonial context.
