Det senaste decenniet har sett en ökad fart i den digitala omvandlingen av kritiska infrastruktursystem för att förbättra deras operativa effektivitet och anslutning över olika domäner. Denna förändring har dock också medfört inneboende cybersäkerhetsrisker som specifikt riktar sig mot en energisektor som blir alltmer beroende av sammankopplade teknologier. Denna uppsats undersöker prestandapåverkan av slutpunktssäkerhet i realtid i PS700-delssystemet av MACH™-systemet från Hitachi Energy, vilket är kritiskt för HVDC-styrning och skydd. Arbetet är centrerat kring en analys för att fastställa prestandamått som jitter, CPU, minne, diskutnyttjande och nätverkstrafik efter att Trellix slutpunktssäkerhet har introducerats.

Den tillämpade metodiken var en fallstudie som inkluderade både kvalitativ och kvantitativ analys. Data samlades in genom att mäta jitter och realtidsprestanda före och efter implementeringen av Trellix. Forskningsresultaten visade att slutpunktssäkerhet var en kritisk strategi för att säkra infrastrukturen mot cyberhot; dock noterades en mätbar ökning av resursutnyttjande och jitter, specifikt CPU 10,5%, minne 2,5%, disk 5,2% och en betydande ökning av nätverkstrafiken efter implementeringen.

Resultaten väcker medvetenhet om att prestandakrav som ställs på kritisk infrastruktur måste balanseras med cybersäkerhet. Studien stödde behovet av att utveckla strategier relaterade till införandet av cybersäkerhet på ett sätt som inte påverkar systemets effektivitet. Vidare forskning bör fokusera på mer adaptiva säkerhetsalgoritmer för att minimera påverkan från säkerhetsåtgärder på realtidssystem. 

Abstract [en]

The last decade has witnessed an increased momentum in the digital transformation of critical infrastructure systems to enhance their operational efficiency and connectivity across different domains. This shift, however, also brought with it inherent cybersecurity risks specifically targeted toward an energy sector that is increasingly dependent on interconnected technologies. This paper investigates the performance impact of endpoint security on real-time in the PS700 subsystem of the MACH™ system from Hitachi Energy, which is critical to HVDC control and protection. The work is centered around an analysis to determine the performance metrics of jitter, CPU, memory, disk usage, and network traffic after Trellix endpoint security has been introduced.

The methodology applied was a case study inclusive of both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Data was collected by taking the measurement of jitter and real-time performance before and after the implementation of Trellix. The research findings were that endpoint security was a critical strategy in securing infrastructure against cyber threats; however, a measurable increase of resource utilization and jitter was realized, specifically, CPU 10.5%, memory 2.5%, disk 5.2% and significant growth in network traffic after the implementation.

For instance, the findings raise the awareness that performance demands imposed on critical infrastructure need to be balanced by cybersecurity. The study backed the need to develop strategies related to the incorporation of cybersecurity in a manner that would not infringe on the efficiency of the system. Further research should focus on more adaptive security algorithms towards the minimization of impact from security measurements on real-time systems.
