The research of this thesis aims to understand how international Generation Z that has studied in Sweden perceives responsible tourism. The primary objectives, which led to the research questions of this thesis are to identify the perceptions on responsible tourism among Generation Z that has studied in Sweden and to explore how their stay in Sweden has influenced the perceptions on responsible tourism. To achieve the aim of this thesis, this qualitative research included interviews with nine international Generation Z individuals. By conducting semi-structured interviews, the process followed a set of questions but also gave individuals the opportunity to engage in a deeper conversation. Then, this thesis used thematic analysis, which led to the creation of two themes, the Responsible Tourism Perception and the Stay in Sweden Effect. Each theme included a set of three sub-themes that reflected the individuals' perceptions. Through the findings, it was evident that the most prominent way the participants perceived responsible tourism related to the respect for local community, culture and history. This sub-theme which considered interacting with locals, learning about the culture, history and language as well as following the local laws and guidelines was the most frequently mentioned perception. As for the effect Sweden had on their perceptions, the most common influential factor among the participants was the Swedish community, which was about their respect for the environment and other nationalities. This thesis contributesto the understanding of the perceptions among Generation Z individuals towards responsible tourism and how their stay in a country can influence these perceptions. It draws attention to the high need to research Generation Z when they take the role of a tourist. Generation Z will be the next generation to inherit today’s problems, it is important to understand the individual responsibility that is needed for achieving sustainability in the future, especially during their travels. The insights of this thesis can encourage other countries to examine Sweden’s strategies to influence Generation Z and how they perceive responsible tourism, which can prepare them for taking the bigger responsibility in the future of leading the tourism industry.
