Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the processes of word formation and linguistic dynamics within the unique lexicon of Malaysian Mandarin, with a specific focus on nouns denoting humans. Drawing from The Dictionary of Malaysian Chinese (Huayu), a selection of 312 lexical entries was analyzed. The investigation involves the categorization of human-referred nouns and examination of various word formation processes. The findings showcase the prevalence of derivation and loanwords over compounding. Particularly notable is the significant presence of Cantonese loanwords, illustrating the intertwining of Cantonese and Malaysian Mandarin. Additionally, loanwords from Malay and English also contribute, highlighting Malaysia's sociolinguistic diversity, and the lexicon's adaptability to different linguistic and cultural inputs. This study highlights the resilience of Malaysian Mandarin in absorbing and reflecting these influences, offering valuable insights into language evolution within multilingual contexts.
