“We are actually just temporary staff” : A qualitative study on perceived organizational and social participation among temporary staff and its impact on engagement within the client organization (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The overall purpose of the study is to create a deeper understanding of how temporary staff perceive organizational and social participation within the client organization. To address this purpose, the study has been conducted using a qualitative approach inspired by the phenomenological orientation. Empirical data collection was inducted through nine semistructured interviews with part-time temporary warehouse personnel. The collected material was analyzed based on theories of participation and engagement.

The study’s results indicate experiences of insufficient organizational and social participation within the client organization. Exclusion from information and discussion forums is shown to result in diminished insight into the purpose of tasks, lack of information, reduced opportunities for influence, and limited possibilities for skills development. There is a perceived sense of segregation between temporary staff and permanent staff, as well as limited access to employee discussions and work-related feedback. These experiences are shown to have a negative impacton the perceived work engagement of temporary staff towards the client organization. By working to promote organizational and social participation for temporary staff, work engagement towards the client organization can be enhanced.
