2024 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
A life in captivity : A qualitative study on the relation between the victim and the perpetrator in Münchausen syndrome by proxy (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the relationship between Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee is affected by Münchausen syndrome by proxy as a central part of their relationship. This study also intends to analyze how their relationship is portrayed in the documentary The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. This study is based on a qualitative method, where the documentary, which serves as the material for this study, will be analyzed. The results from the analysis will be presented based on five different themes in accordance with thematic analysis. The results will also be analyzed based on the theoretical frameworks, Goffman's theory of frontstage and backstage and Parsons' concept of sick role. The results of this study show that the relationship between Dee Dee and Gypsy was characterized by facades and lies, both to eachother and to the public. The maintenance of this facade to the public allowed Dee Dee to continue exposing Gypsy to child abuse through the falsification of symptoms, known as Münchausen syndrome by proxy. Which resulted in Gypsy adopting the sick role.
