Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to obtain a profound comprehension of Generation Y and Generation Z’s work preferences and to examine what attracts these generations in their choice of employer. The study's particular focus is on work flexibility. To achieve this, a qualitative study with a phenomenological focus was chosen. Through an empirical thematic analysis of their experiences of work flexibility and work preferences, the study sought to highlight what attracts these generations, as well as possible differences and similarities between the two generations.

The results of the study show that work flexibility is by far the most important aspect, regardless of generational affiliation. Generation Y’s work preferences regarding work flexibility are strongly linked to leisure and family life. For generation Z, flexibility is also of great importance, but their view is more connected to individualism and a freedom to partially control their time. The study shows clear differences in how generation Y and generation Z value and prioritize holidays and time off. Generation Y is asking for more vacation days and their view of vacation and time off is strongly linked to its values around private and familylife. Generation Z tends to value higher pay over the possibility of long leave. When it comes to leadership, both generations have similar expectations of having managers who show trust and confidence in their employees. Generation Z values management and expecting regular feedback and coaching from their managers to order to thrive and perform in their workplace.
