The initial steps of criminality and the road back : A thematic analysis of three autobiographies (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Youth crime is a significant issue in the Swedish social debate. This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of men´s pathways into and out of crime by analyzing three autobiographies using a qualitative, thematic approach. The findings reveal that factors such as upbringing conditions, family dynamics, segregation, exclusion, and exposure to violence play crucial roles in leading young men to criminal behavior. Effective recidivism treatment, along with personal motivation and reflection, are vital for their rehabilitation. The Analysis identifies two main themes: emotional managment, exclusion and inclusion. The autobiographies depict chaotic family relationships, segregation, and violence. Despite instances of recidivism, the subjects ultimately manage to break the cycle of crime and reintegrate into society through treatment, reflection and strong motivation.
