Kvinnors upplevelse av socialt stöd under förlossning : En kvantitativ retrospektiv tvärsnittsstudie (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Objective: to study women's experience of support received from support persons during childbirth and how the experience of support relates to underlying factors and labour outcomes. Setting: Maternity hospitals in Sweden. Design: The participants were recruited online. The tested and validated "Birth Companion Support Questionnaire" was converted into equivalent Swedish conditions. In total, 452 women registered on the website, and of those, 421 women responded to the baseline questionnaire while pregnant. The follow-up questionnaire was answered by 335 women one month after giving birth, resulting in a response rate of 79.5%. The data was analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Participants: participants had to meet the following criteria a) pregnant first-time mothers; b) planning to undergo a vaginal birth; c) in pregnancy weeks 25–36 at the time of registration; d) having the ability to speak, read, and understand Swedish; and e) having access to a smartphone or tablet. Findings: Most women were satisfied with the support provided by their partner, however, several factors showed statistical significance regarding how the participants perceived the support. Women in an active relationship who received support from their partner had a higher rate of satisfaction with the support offered. Fear of birth was shown to correlate with lower satisfaction with the support offered. Furthermore, findings unexpectedly revealed that pharmacological pain relief methods had a positive impact on the participating women's perception of the support given by their companions. Conclusions and implications for practice: Factors that may affect women's experience of physical, emotional and total support were identified. For a midwife, this can be useful when identifying and managing women who need more support by knowing which factors will improve the woman's experience of the support provided.
