Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to critically examine how refugees from various backgrounds are portrayed in European media, with a particular focus on Sky News. It analyzes the expressions, images, concepts, norms, and values used in their visual news reports during the years 2015 and 2022. A critical discourse analysis with a postcolonial perspective is applied to examine how power relations and political dimensions affect the framing of refugees. The results of this study showed a remarkable shift in media narrative and framing, with refugees in 2015 were presented as economic migrants threatening European security and culture, which aligns with colonial discourses of the "other", while Ukrainian refugees in 2022 were presented as victims of the war. By delving into and examining media discourses, the study aims to cast light on the political and power dimensions of refugee representation in the media, contributing to a deeper understanding of how media narratives influence policies towards refugees.
