Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This thesis aims to investigate the attitudes Swedish citizens have towards referendums as acomplement to representative democracy. There is limited data and research on this topic and this study aims to fill the void of information. The thesis specifically examines whether there is a correlation between an individual's attitude towards referendums, their perception of the importance of democracy, their subjective political affiliation, political trust and lastly gender (in terms of man or woman). The study is based on three central theories, New Politics, Dissatisfied Democrats, and Stealth Democracy. The study is quantitative and utilizes data from SVTs 2003 exit poll. The data is analyzed through cross-tabulations and a correlation analysis to identify potential correlations and patterns. The results show that the New Politics perspective aligns the most with the findings of this study, and shows a significant correlation between an individual's political trust and their attitude towards referendums. The results also show that women are more likely to support referendums and that the individual's subjective ideological position influences their attitude towards referendums. People more to the left are more likely to support more referendums, whereas right-leaning individuals are more inclined to oppose them. Finally, the study finds that an individual's perception of the importance of democracy is significantly correlated with their attitude towards referendums, with stronger support for democracy correlating with stronger support for referendums
