Safety and insecurity in school : a pupil’s perspective (English)
Abstract [en]

This study explores pupils' perceptions of their perceived safety and insecurity in a school environment, aiming to define these experiences and identify strategies for cultivating a secure environment through the use of interviews. Utilizing qualitative data gathered through semi-structured interviews, the research reveals key findings. Students of both genders highlight the real threats of violence and intimidation as a central concern, accompanied by the widespread negative impact of derogatory comments and online harassment. The study emphasizes the crucial role of school staff in providing support, underscoring the need for a supportive school environment. Furthermore, the findings indicate that trivializing serious situations, particularly those linking abusive behaviors to perceived "love," creates a concerning association between love and violence. Students define safety not only as the absence of danger but also as a sense of community and belonging. The study suggests that proactive intervention from school staff is vital for fostering a secure and supportive school environment. Integrating these findings into guidelines and strategies by school leadership is recommended. Ultimately, inadequate intervention from school staff, as perceived by students, emerges as a central cause of insecurity, emphasizing the necessity of active involvement from teachers and school leaders for the well-being of students.
