In modern mining, so-called block models are used, which are developed by geologists with the help of piston sampling and other measuring instruments. The block models are digital three-dimensional representations of the ore bodies that show the iron content in the various areas of the ore body. They are used as a tool in production planning to locate where it is economically viable to extract the ore from.At the Malmberget mine in the city of Gällivare, there have been discrepancies in measured iron content values between the mucking stage and the final stage of the hoisting system, i.e. when the ore reach the surface. The research involves determining the reason behind those discrepancies and verifying the block models by recreating the mucking report based on the values obtained from the block model, then comparing these to the values of the final stage of the hoisting system. The result shows that these discrepancies are due to an error in the loading machines calculation of the iron content. The loading machine calculates the iron content using the iron density, the mass of the ore in the bucket and the bucket volume. The problem is that the loader calculates a constant bucket volume, i.e. it assumes the bucket is always full and margins of error arise as the bucket may contain larger blocks of ore, despite the fact that there are also cavities/voids between the blocks that reduce the actual volume. This results in the loading machine calculating a lower iron content. The results of the block model credibility were analyzed through tables and graphs comparing the total production per day between the final stage of the hoisting system to the corresponding values from a recreated mucking report based on the block model.
The comparison showed a positive trend on the graphs with marginal differences in the outcome in relation to the volumes produced and its iron content. Referring to Figure 10 the differences of the total volumes produced per day were due to uncalibrated values from the additional amount of iron ore extracted during the construction of mining tunnels. The differences for the iron content in figure 11 is due to uncalibrated values for waste rock that was transported together with the iron ore. It is more cost effective adding a certain amount of waste rock to the iron ore than transporting the whole waste to the waste sites (informant 1, 2024).
