Teachers’ perceptions of how extramural English affects English language learning (English)
Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker de möjligheter och utmaningar som lärare möter med extramural engelska och hur lärare uppfattar extramurala engelskans inverkan på elevernas motivation. Genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med grundskollärare fokuserar studien på deras uppfattning och erfarenheter av extramural engelska och hur de förhåller sig till det. Resultaten av studien visar en stor variation av utmaningar och möjligheter som lärarna möter i sitt klassrum. Några av de deltagande lärarna hade positiva attityder till extramural engelska och uttryckte uppskattning för dess positiva effekter. Några av effekterna var ökad exponering för språket, förbättrad kommunikationsförmåga och ökad motivation. Lärarna identifierade däremot också negativa aspekter av extramural engelska och dess utmaningar i förhållande till att bland annat integrera sina erfarenheter i klassrummet, formell undervisning och motivation. Sammanfattningsvis bidrar denna studie till en djupare förståelse för hur lärare upplever extramural engelska och hur det är relaterat till nivån av engagemang och motivation i klassrummet. Resultaten från denna studie ger nya perspektiv på språkinlärning utanför skolan. Denna studie illustrerar också vikten av att ta hänsyn till elevens extramurala upplevelser och integrera dem för att skapa en mer meningsfull lärmiljö. 

Abstract [en]

This study examines the opportunities and challenges that teachers encounter with extramural English and how teachers perceive extramural English’s impact on pupils motivation. Through semi-structured interviews with primary teachers, the study focuses on their perception and experiences of extramural English and how they relate to it. The results of the study reveal a large variety of challenges and opportunities that the teachers face in their classroom. Some of the participating teachers had positive attitudes towards extramural English and expressed appreciation towards its positive effects. Some of the effects were increased exposure to the language, improved communication skills and enhanced motivation. The teachers also identified negative aspects of extramural English related to integrating their experiences into the classroom, formal teaching and motivation. In summary, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how teachers experience extramural English and how it is related to their level of engagement and motivation in the classroom. The findings from this study give new perspectives of language learning outside of school. This study also illustrates the importance of taking the pupil’s extramural experiences into account and integrating them to create a more meaningful learning environment.
