The search for inner peace is a journey that almost every person embarks on at some point in life. For individuals who have experienced a stroke, this endeavor takes on new meaning, not only in the mind but also in the physical space. Virginia Woolf once spoke of the significance of “a room of one’s own.” For her, this was a space for creativity and being able to express herself in text. For those recovering from a stroke, a supportive home, room, or environment can be a place for healing, self-discovery, and reconnection with society. The person with a stroke is not just a passive recipient in this environment but an active participant who uses, makes choices, and makes decisions about the space and daily life. The environment of the home does more than meet physical needs. It offers a place of inner peace, a space to reconnect with one’s identity beyond the label “stroke survivor.”. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Mardelle McCuskey Shepley; individual chapters, the contributors.
