In search of a world identity : The anti-identity in two novels by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr and Yambo Ouologuem (English)
Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine in how far the anti-identity characteristic of a world literature is manifested in two famous novels written by Mbougar Sarr in 2021 and Yambo Ouologuem in 1968. To do this, the thesis is composed of three main parts. Firstly, it gives an overview of the evolution of African literature written in French, including the advent of world literature. We show that the major objective of the movement for world literature, at least according to a manifest published in Le Monde in 2007, is the liberation of francophone literature from its pact with a single nation. We then go on to describe the concept of the anti-identity, which, according to Achille Mbembe, corresponds to a kind of union of multiple identities in motion. In the final section, we compare how the two chosen novels The most secret memory of men by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr and Bound to violence by Yambo Ouologuem exhibit traces of the anti-identity. We conclude that, although there are many signs of it in both, the absence of such a movement may have resulted in a tragic ending for the writer Yambo Ouologuem. Furthermore, we show that a “world literature” was partly responsible for the first black writer from Sub Saharan Africa being awarded the Prix Goncourt in 2021.
