Final Girls: Sluts and saints : A study of breaking conventions concerning the female characters in the X-trilogy (English)
Abstract [en]

Since the conception of the slasher-subgenre, the conventions associated with it have been in constant change. Therefore, this essay aims to understand what developments have been made regarding female representation, especially in the final-girl trope, in a contemporary trilogy in the subgenre. Ti West’s X trilogy, released between 2022 and 2024 was chosen as subject of study. Utilizing Jens Eder’s clock of character for analyzing the female characters, analyzing their sexuality and focusing on how the trilogy used the genres established conventions, the study brings forth clear indications that the trilogy has shown significant developments since the beginning of the slasher-genre regarding female representation. The trilogy accomplished this by using the conventions of old, breaking them - and then subverting the expectations of the audience. The depiction of the character Maxine Minx, the final-girl of the trilogy, showed clear differences in the context of femininity, sexual engagement and ambitions. The trilogy shared some meta-aspects with films of the postmodern era, where films of the era showed clear awareness of the rules and conventions of the genre, to use them as a narrative tool.
