Since the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the issue of children's participation and influence in urban planning has received significant attention. Children now have the right to influence and participate in the design of their environment, although the implementation may vary depending on the municipality and situation.

The purpose of this study was to examine how the municipality of Falun works with child-related issues in urban planning, with a particular focus on rural areas, and to explore how children in rural areas perceive their environment. To achieve this, a case study approach was used, with interviews with stakeholders from the municipality of Falun, a workshop with children, and a document study as the primary methods for data collection. The results show that the municipality of Falun has made a conscious effort to include children in urban planning, but children's opinions have not always had the desired impact in the decision-making process. The children expressed a need for greater access to environments that allow for varied physical activities, safe walking and cycling paths, well-lit areas, and better access to services. In other words, while the municipality of Falun has ambitions to implement the Convention on the Rights of the Child, there are challenges in moving from words to action.

Sedan FN:s konvention om barns rättigheter togs fram så har frågan kring barns delaktighet och inflytande i samhällsplaneringen fått ett stort fokus. Barn har nu rätt att påverka och delta i utformningen av sin omgivning även om genomförandet kan variera beroende på kommun och situation.

Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka hur Falu kommun arbetar med barnfrågan i samhällsplaneringen, med särskilt fokus på landsbygden, samt att kartlägga hur barn på landsbygden ser på sin närmiljö. För att uppnå detta så användes en fallstudieansats där intervjuer med aktörer från Falu kommun, workshop med barn och en dokumentstudie utgjorde de primära metoderna för datainsamling. Resultatet visar på att Falu kommun har ett medvetet arbete med att inkludera barn samhällsplaneringen men att barns åsikter inte alltid fått den påverkan som önskas i beslutsprocessen. Barnen uttryckte behov av större tillgång till miljöer som möjliggör en varierad fysisk aktivitet, säkra gång- och cykelvägar, belysta miljöer, och bättre tillgång till service. Med andra ord har Falu kommun ambitioner om att implementera barnkonventionen men att det finns utmaningar i att gå från ord till praktik.
