Patients’ perceived quality of life after undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Percutaneous Coronary Intervention is a collective term for a surgical procedure where coronary vessels are accessed to remove blockages in order to restore free circulation in the coronary arteries. Undergoing a Percutaneous Coronary Intervention can impact both mental and physical quality of life. To investigate the quality of life in patient groups, measurements can be conducted using various assessment tools.

Aim The aim of this literature study is to compile research results on patients´ perceived quality of life after undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Method The literature study was conducted following the principles of a literature review with elements of the methodology used in systematic reviews, based on 14 included articles as the foundation for the results. The articles were published in CINAHL and PubMed between the years 2012-2024. The results were analyzed using a deductive content analysis method inspired by Friberg's four-step process.

Results In the literature review, two main categories and eight subcategories were identified. The main categories were physical and mental quality of life. The subcategories resulted in physical role functioning, pain, general health, and physical functioning within the physical main category. In the mental main category, social functioning, mental health, emotional role functioning, and vitality were identified as subcategories.

Conclusion The literature study revealed that the majority of patients undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention experience an improved quality of life.
