To care for patients with covid-19 during a pandemic : Nurses experience of their work environment - a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund

Abstract [en]

Background

A good working environment at work is a key factor in preventing illness and accidents at work. The employer is responsible for ensuring that the environmental requirements at the workplace are met and that improvement measures are put in place if the working environment is deficient. The corona pandemic entailed that the healthcare system had to undergo drastic changes, which may have affected the working environment among the nurses who had to work on the frontline with covid-19 patients.

Aim

The aim of the study is to describe nurses' experiences of their work environment in close patient work with Covid-19 patients during a pandemic.

Method

The thesis is a structured literature review in which 13 articles form the basis of the work. All articles are published between the years 2020-2024 and have been systematically selected from the Cinahl and Pubmed databases.

Results

The results showed that nurses have divided opinions about the protective equipment depending on the care unit. Some described inadequate access and quality, while others found no deficiencies in the personal protective equipment. Rapid changes regarding guidelines and reorganizations were described, as well as a fear of caring for a seriously ill patient group, where there was a lack of knowledge about the state of the disease. High workload, the need for managers' support and the importance of community and ventilation among colleagues are highlighted.

Conclusions

During the corona pandemic, there were major changes in the way of working that came to affect the nurse's work environment on several levels in the work close to the patient during the covid-19 pandemic. The managers' presence and commitment proved to be of great importance in terms of the environment at work and the nurses' experiences of the pandemic. A good collaboration and the possibility of being able to ventilate with other colleagues improved health and was crucial in dealing with the pandemic
