Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Slutsats: Covid-19 pandemin synliggjorde vaccintveksamhet i samhällsdebatten.

Abstract [en]

Background: Vaccine hesitancy poses a significant threat to public health. It was a controversial question during the Covid-19 pandemic. The reasons behind individuals' decisions not to vaccinate themselves are complex. In this study we take a closer look into the perspectives behind Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy using the framework of person-centred care. Aim: To describe perspectives associated with Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy among adults in Europe. Method: This structured literature review was conducted according to the methodology used in systematic reviews. It includes 15 scientific articles from the databases CINAHL and PsycInfo, published between 2020 and 2023. A thematic content analysis of the articles’ results was performed in a three steps process. Results: The results of the analysis are presented in four main categories and eleven subcategories: Negative emotions, Thoughts about the vaccine's properties, Personal beliefs, and Distrust of authorities. Conclusions: The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted vaccine hesitancy as a public health issue. In May 2023 Covid-19 ceased to pose an acute threat to global health. However, vaccine hesitancy remains a topic in the interactions between nurses and patients. A deeper understanding of the factors underlying this phenomenon can support nurses in balancing encouragement of evidence-based decision-making with respect for patients' autonomy.
