Nurses´ perspective on communication about sexual health in healthcare : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Resultat Resultatet delades in i tre huvudkategorier, “Organisationens roll”, “Sjuksköterskans roll”och “Patientens inverkan”.

Abstract [en]

Background Sexual health is a big part of being human. One of the nurse's core competencies is to work person-centred and to promote, prevent and protect health. It is the nurse's responsibility to create a good relationship with the patient.

Aim The aim was to describe nurses' perceptions of communication about sexual health with patients.

Method A structured literature review with elements of the methodology used in systematic literature studies. A total of 13 articles were included in the results, these were of qualitative (n=8) and quantitative (n=5) design.

Results The results were divided into three main categories, "Role of the organization", "Role of the nurse" and "The patient’s impact". The sub-categories reflect a breadth of perceptions that include the influence of work environment, education level, attitude, working methods, emotions and cultural aspects.

Conclusions Nurses face challenges in communicating about sexual health with patients. Further research is required to more specifically examine which measures and organizational factors promote the nurse's communication about sexual health. Increased knowledge in sexual health and communication strategies ensures the quality of the care.
