The Use of Literature as a Method for Vocabulary Teaching in the ELE Classroom (English)
Abstract [es]

Abstract [en]

Vocabulary acquisition is essential in the learning of a foreign language, as emphasized by the Swedish curriculum (Skolverket, 2011: 12). In this context, literature emerges as a valuable tool for enriching vocabulary, offering authentic and varied language that allows students to become familiar with complex structures and expand their vocabulary (Collie & Slater, 1987:5-6). This study investigated the impact of authentic literature on teaching vocabulary in Spanish as a foreign language (ELE), assessing vocabulary retention among students who worked with literary texts and those who did not. The results indicated that students exposed to literature performed better in lexical retention tests, both in the short and long term. From a teaching perspective, a variety of approaches were observed regarding the use of authentic literature in the classroom, although its potential to enrich both vocabulary and cultural understanding was generally acknowledged. In conclusion, authentic literature proves to be an effective tool for teaching and retaining vocabulary in ELE, provided it is tailored to the students' level and needs.
