Abstract [en]

This study examines the English and Swedish translations of the manga Hagane no renkinjutsushi (鋼の錬金術師) by Arakawa Hiromu (荒川弘). The aim of this research is to answer two key questions. First, which translation procedures were employed in the translation of Hagane no renkinjutsushi into English and Swedish and if the used translation procedures differed. Second, if differences were found, how these differences in use of translation procedures impacted the different versions? To answer these questions the texts were first gathered from the different versions, and the translations were then analysed against the original Japanese text separately to see which translation procedures were used. The data gathered from each of the versions was then compared to answer the first research question. Then, tendencies found in the previous steps in the two translations were compared and the differences found were used to answer the second question. The conclusions drawn from the study were that, while both translations used all the translation procedures considered, the frequency with which they were used differed between them. The English version tended to use the procedures which kept the tone and information closer to the original more often, while the Swedish version tended to make more impactful changes. In some cases, this caused the Swedish translation to have a different tone and lack information when compared to the original.
