An analysis of the legitimacy crisis and declining trust in a politically unstable Peru during 2022–2024 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines the dimensions of legitimacy in Peru during Dina Boluarte's presidency (2022–2024) amidst an ongoing political crisis. Drawing on David Beetham's three-dimensonal definition and Wiesner and Harfst’s internal and external axes, the study analyzes how political legitimacy is influenced by factors such as opportunism, dissatisfaction and weak representation. The study employs a content analysis of mediaarticles and public opinion data. The results reveal a significant erosion of legitimacy across all three dimensions, which exacerbate mistrust in central political institutions in Peru. The study emphasizes the need for further research on how external actors and institutional reforms can help restore legitimacy in similar contexts.
