Bakgrund: Sveriges förlossningsvård har svårt att behålla sina barnmorskor. Regeringen har gett Socialstyrelsen i uppdrag att undersöka hur yrket kan göras mer attraktivt och långsiktigt kunna säkra kompetensförsörjningen. Flertalet studier har undersökt nyexaminerade barnmorskor och deras arbetsförhållanden för att försöka förstå denna problematik, medan det finns knapphändig forskning rörande barnmorskor som befinner sig i perioden mellan att vara ny och erfaren, om deras upplevelse av trygghet och kompetens. Syfte: Syftet var att undersöka förlossningsbarnmorskors upplevelse av trygghet och kompetens efter tre år i yrket. Metod: Kvalitativ intervjustudie med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Resultat: Resultatet visade att barnmorskor som varit kliniskt verksamma på förlossningsavdelning under tre år kände sig tryggare och mer kompetenta än när de var nyexaminerade. Flera faktorer bidrog till deras upplevelse av ökad trygghet och kompetens. I resultatet framkom vikten av stöd från kollegor och ett tillåtande arbetsklimat, ett stegvist lärande och att erfarenhet gav trygghet att hålla det normala normalt. Slutsats: Om trygghet fanns, fanns möjlighet att utveckla sin kompetens och en säkerhet i de praktiska färdigheterna ökade upplevelsen av trygghet. För att barnmorskorna skulle kunna känna sig trygga krävdes att en rad olika faktorer interagerade med varandra. Klinisk tillämpbarhet: Förhoppningen är att examensarbetet kan bidra till att ge nya perspektiv på vad som fungerar i stödjandet och välkomnandet avbarnmorskor och få dem att kvarstanna i yrket. Även att det skulle kunna fungera som motivation och inspiration till barnmorskor i början av sin karriär.

Background: Labour wards in Sweden experience difficulties retaining midwives. The government has assigned the National Board of Health and Welfare to investigate what can be done to make the profession more attractive and how to secure the supply of competence. Numerous studies focus on newly graduated midwives and their work conditions to understand this dilemma, but there is a knowledge gap regarding midwives who have been working clinically for a couple of years and their experience of competence and the feeling of safety. Aim: This study aims to investigate delivery care midwives' perceptions of professional competence and safety after three years of working in a delivery care unit. Method: A qualitative, semi-structured interview study. Results: The results showed that the midwives who had been clinically working at a labour ward for three years felt safer and more competent than they did when they were newly graduated. The midwives raised the importance of support of colleagues and an open working climate, a gradual learning journey and that experience provided the confidence to maintain the normal birthing process. Conclusion: When there was a feeling of safety, there was potential for developing one's competence, and increased confidence in practical skills enhances the perception of safety. Many factors affected the perception of safety and competence, and they worked closely together. Clinical implications: Hopefully, this thesis can contribute to providing new perspectives on what works in supporting and welcoming midwives, and help them remain in the profession. Furthermore, it can serve as motivation and inspiration for midwives in the beginning of their career.
