The purpose of this study is to examine how teaching materials for the subject of art in grades 7–9 represent the core content of picture analysis according to the Swedish curriculum (Lgr22). Three teaching materials – one textbook and two digital resources – have been analysed through a qualitative content analysis framework. The study explores how the themes of art, media images, visual culture and identity are reflected in these materials. The results show that all teaching materials align with the curriculum's guidelines for the core content of picture analysis. The difference lies in what they choose to emphasize and in how much space is devoted to picture analysis in the materials. The physical teaching material focuses mainly on visual culture and societal-critical aspects, whereas the digital materials provide a broader and more general presentation of picture analysis. These findings indicate that digital teaching materials have the ability to provide broader coverage compared to the physical textbook.
