Nurse’s experiences of dementia care in acute care setting : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background The number of people living with dementia is expected to climb, placing demands on society to meet the increased needs. The disease involves cognitive impairment that effects the ability to understand and convey information, which challenges the healthcare system to provide good care to people with dementia.

Aim This literature review aims to investigate nurses' experiences of dementia care in acute care setting.

Method This literature review was carried out as a structured literature study similar to the methodology used in systematics reviews. Three different databases were used, and fifteen scientific articles were reviewed according to Nilsson’s review template. For the results analysis Friberg’s five step model was used.

Results Nurses’ experienced barriers to provide person-centred care to people with dementia in acute care related to time and staff shortages, the environment and insufficient competence about the disease. Despite these obstacles, the nurses adapted to the situation and used person-centred communication.

Conclusions Insufficient person-centered care is unfavorable for people with dementia, leading to increased anxiety and stress in both patients and healthcare professionals.
