Nursing staffs’ experience of encountering women exposed to domestic violence : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Intimate partner violence is a global societal issue that primarily affects women. The violence can take various forms and has devastating consequences for the victim's mental and physical health. As a nurse, there is a significant responsibility to recognize these women and offer support and care.

Aim The aim is to explore nursing staff’s experiences of encountering women exposed to domestic violence.

Method A literature review with a qualitative approach. The literature review is based on 15 selected qualitative articles. The searches were conducted in the CINAHL and PubMed databases.

Results The data analysis resulted in two main categories: “To work as nursing staff in challenging situations” and “When the organization fails”.

Conclusions Nursing staff experience several emotional and organizational challenges when working with women exposed to violence. In order to provide effective care, clear guidelines, continuous education, better interprofessional collaboration, and adequate resources are needed. Healthcare staff also require support to manage the emotional strains that the work involves.
