Nurses’ perceptions of improvement areas within end of life care : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the goal of good palliative care as relieving suffering by treating and minimizing various symptoms. Within palliative care, there are several tools and philosophies to work towards providing good palliative care, despite this, general palliative care does not always meet the WHO's goals.

Aim The purpose of the study is to identify areas for improvement in palliative care at the end of life based on nurses' experiences.

Method This thesis is a literature study based on 13 European articles with qualitative, quantitative and a mixed method approach. The articles were published between 2015-2024 in the databases Cinahl and PubMed.

Results Three main themes of improvement areas were identified: Personal aspects, The care of the patient and the surroundings and conditions. Nine subthemes from these themes were identified containing areas of improvement that nurses have seen in their work with palliative patients in from all ages.

Conclusions Despite the existence of well-formulated tools within the palliative care, it is not always performed in the best way. Further education and implementation of these tools are essential within all care settings where palliative care is conducted. Without these fundamental tools the patient is bereaved a good death.
