Patients with Mental Illness: Experiences of Being Treated in Somatic Healthcare : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Mental illness is a public health issue that affects individuals’ quality of life and access to healthcare. People with mental illness have an increased risk of somatic diseases but often face barriers within somatic healthcare. Research shows that patients with mental illness may feel that their healthcare needs are not taken seriously.

Aim The aim of this literature review is to explore how adult patients with mental illness experience their encounters within somatic healthcare.

Method This study was conducted as a structured literature review, where relevant research was selected through systematic database searches. The included articles were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Results People with mental illness often receive inadequate somatic care due to stigma, diagnostic overshadowing, and lack of understanding, while good communication and respect promote positive experiences.

Conclusions The study indicates that improved communication and increased knowledge about mental illness among healthcare professionals can enhance patients' healthcare experiences.
