Patients’ experiences of venous leg ulcers : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Background Venous leg ulcers involve a full-thickness skin injury on the lower extremities that does not heal spontaneously. A common cause is venous insufficiency. Leg ulcersare a common problem and with the increasing elderly population, the problems will increase. Primary treatment includes compression therapy and good woundcare. Nurses have the overall responsibility over wound care.

Aim The purpose of the literature review is to describe patients' experiences of venous leg ulcers.

Method The thesis was carried out as a structured literature review with elements of the methodology used in systematic reviews. Fifteen articles were selected through searches in CINAHL and PubMed databases and analyzed using Friberg´s fivestep model.

Results Patients' experiences of venous leg ulcers resulted in three main categories and eight subcategories: Emotional experiences, Physical experiences, Treatment related experience.

Conclusions Patients describe feelings such as shame, hopelessness and fears that the wound will not heal. They also describe how the treatment in most cases is perceived as negative as it can lead to pain, physical limitation and problems taking care of daily hygiene.
