Adult cancer patients' experiences of the nurse's attitudes : a litterature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background There are cancer patients everywhere in healthcare. The responsibility of nurses is to identify and meet physiological needs, as well as initiate conversations about the patient's mental health and existential needs. Care is a comprehensive concept that includes, among other things, interaction between people, communication and empathy, and contributes to the establishment of nurse-patient relations.

Aim The aim is to describe adult cancer patients' experiences of the nurse's attitudes.

Method A systematic literature review based on 15 qualitative articles from PubMed and CINAHL. The articles were quality assessed and analyzed using Friberg's analysis method.

Results The results showed two main categories: The nurse's approach and the importance of communication, as well as five associated subcategories.

Conclusions Differences were identified in patients' experiences of the nurse's approach. A good approach was experienced when nurses showed respect and empathy, unlike lack of competence is perceived as frustrating and leads to feelings of abandonment among patients. It is important for nurses to update their knowledge and acquire new evidence based on the community in which they work.
