Postoperative pain relief after orthopedic surgeries : Patients’ experiences: a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Postoperative pain relief is a central component of nursing care following orthopedic surgery. Although treatment protocols exist, there is a growing need to understand pain relief from a subjective and patient centered perspective. Focusing on patients’ lived experiences may contribute to more person centered and effective care.

Aim To describe patients’ experiences of postoperative pain relief after orthopedic surgery.

Method A qualitative literature review was conducted. Eleven scientific articles were selected through systematic searches in the CINAHL and PubMed databases. The articles were analyzed using a structured and inductive approach.

Results Patients’ experiences of postoperative pain relief were not only about its physical effect, but also about how the relief was perceived as accessible, understandable, and safe. The experience was influenced by the patient’s ability to absorb information, the response from healthcare staff, the organization of care, and whether the patient felt able to express their needs. When the care relationship was characterized by attentiveness, continuity, and affirmation, patients described the pain relief as feeling more present, meaningful, and effective in its alleviating function.

Conclusions Postoperative pain relief should be understood as a subjective, relational, and contextual experience. The nurse’s presence and communication are crucial for the relief to be perceived as meaningful.
