The nurse´s experience of self-care support for type 2 diabetes in primary care : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Type 2 diabetes is a global public health challenge linked to unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and obesity. Early detection and intervention are crucial to preventing complications. Self-care plays a central role in management, where the nurse has an important responsibility to promote the patient`s health by supporting and motivating lifestyle changes.

Aim The aim is to describe the nurses’ experience in supporting self-care among adult patients with type 2 diabetes in primary care.

Method A structured literature review was conducted. The searches were conducted in the databases PubMed and CINAHL databases, and analyzed through Friberg’s fivestep model. The searches were structured using the PEO model and included peer reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024.

Results Two main categories of were identified: challenges and the importance of promoting patient health. The findings show that nurses encounter obstacles such as lack of resources and time, financial constraints, and cultural differences that affect their ability to support patients.

Conclusions Type 2 diabetes requires support from nurses to help patient’s manage and live with the disease in their daily lives. Various factors influence their ability to provide support in primary care.
