Abstract [en]

Young adults are often at the beginning of their working lives and face the challenge of establishing themselves in a labor market with high demands. Youth unemployment has increased over the past year, making entry into the labor market more difficult and intensifying competition among young people seeking employment. This study examined the factors that influence young adults opportunities to establish themselves in the labor market in the county of Dalarna, using Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of social, cultural, and economic capital as a theoretical framework. The study focuses on individuals aged 18–24 and is based on six semi-structured interviews—five with young adults and one with an employment officer. Through a qualitative approach, the study analyzes how different forms of capital interact in the process of securing employment. The results show that access to social networks, education, and economic resources plays a crucial role in obtaining a job. At the same time, a lack of capital can present significant barriers to employment. Several interviewees expressed that personal contacts and previous experience are often valued more highly than formal education in recruitment processes. By analyzing this from a sociological perspective, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how structural conditions affect young people's chances in working life.
