A qualitative study on exchange and value-creating activities in bandy (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Bandy has declined in popularity over the past few decades. Decreasing audience numbers and a lack of development in line with other major sports have negatively impacted bandy's attractiveness, particularly when it comes to sponsorship revenue. Despite infrastructural investments, the sport has struggled to generate the growth it aspires to achieve. In an increasingly rationalized sports market, sponsors tend to seek partnerships that offer the greatest possible return, which places increased pressure on smaller sports like bandy to demonstrate their value.

This qualitative study investigates how five top-division bandy clubs work with valuecreating activities in their sponsorship collaborations. The empirical data is based on semistructured interviews with individuals directly involved in sponsorship within the respective clubs. The study is grounded in Exchange Theory, which has enabled an analysis of how the exchange between clubs and sponsors is experienced and developed over time.

The result shows that bandy clubs experience a higher need to invest time and resources when working with sponsor relations compared to clubs in more established sports. Traditionally, the exchange between bandy clubs and sponsors has been limited, which has now led to a situation where the clubs face a crossroads. The clubs are now forced to act in order to create mutually value-generating collaborations. Several clubs have emphasized that they have already started this development process, while others emphasize that a change is necessary and is being planned.
