Sponsorship’s Added Value : A qualitative study of how major Swedish sports events can create added value for themselves through their sponsors (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Sponsorship is becoming an increasingly central marketing tool. Resources are exchanged between sporting events and sponsors in a mutual pursuit of increased value. Despite the reciprocal nature of sponsorship, previous research has primarily focused on the sponsor’s perspective, while the sponsored events’ potential to generate added value through the partnership has received limited attention. The aim of this study is therefore to increase understanding of how major Swedish sporting events can create value for themselves through their sponsors. In this study, value creation is defined as a surplus beyond contractual agreement, such as emotional experiences, strengthened collaborations, or increased participant numbers. The theoretical framework is based on previous research on sports event sponsorship and draws on the concepts of value creation, exchange, congruence, and brand image transfer. A qualitative research approach has been applied, including semi-structured interviews with four sporting events and two sponsoring companies. The interviews were conducted on a general level, without focusing on specific sponsorship collaborations. The results indicate that sporting events with an understanding of the sponsor's motivations and needs are more likely to achieve value creation. Furthermore, the findings suggest that events are often perceived as interchangeable, as sponsors primarily seek associations with the values of sport itself rather than with the brand of a specific event. The study contributes insights into how sporting events can make active and strategic decisions to enhance the value they derive from sponsorship partnerships.
